Epic Citadel - By Tom

I leaned casually against the weather beaten castle wall, gazing out over the desolate plains surrounding the castle. The horizon was lined with mountains, their peaks dusted with snow, the rest tinged purple in the twilight. The sun resembled an amber orb sinking behind the silhouettes of the hills, its light just reaching the castle.

The citadel was situated on a high mound of rock, sheer cliffs falling hundreds of metres to either side. A river gushed merrily in the valley below them, its surface dancing in the light from the setting sun. Rising high over the river was a decrepit stone bridge linking the neighbouring hill in a graceful arch. The sun was almost gone now, only its tip was still visible slowly sinking behind the tallest mountain. Until finally it vanished and all turned to inky blackness. Turning slowly away I strode to the rotting castle door and slipped inside.

The tall buildings, lining the cobbled road, loomed out of the darkness. The aroma of rotting fruit wafted on the stale air from the abandoned market. All was deathly silent, apart from the cry of ravens nesting in the rooftops. Rats scuttled past, thriving in the disease ridden citadel. I drew my cloak tighter around and strode purposefully onwards, past the boarded up shops, towards the castle.

  1. Tom, Your writing is awesome! I really liked how the start really pulled the reader in, 'I leaned casually against the weather beaten castle wall, gazing out over the desolate plains surrounding the castle.' All of those adjectives really made it a scene description. E.g inky blackness, their peaks dusted with snow

  2. Incredible! Every sentence is description, description, description. You've set the the scene so well e.g The citadel was situated on a high mound of rock, sheer cliffs falling hundreds of metres to either side.

  3. Your writing is great. You used some really good verbs e.g. "strode" and "wafted". The ravens were a nice touch too.
